McLaren P1 and The Nature of Design

Art Imitates Life

If you don’t know Frank Stephenson by name, you’ll definitely know his work. The legendary designer is the mind behind some of the most iconic vehicles, including the modern takes on the Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper. But he’s also the guy who penned the Ferrari F430, Maserati MC12, and you guessed it, the McLaren P1.

Art imitates life – and what purer form of life is there than Mother Nature? The McLaren P1 follows a similar ethos. It’s hard to make a completely no-frills car in modern times, but the McLaren P1 comes close. It’s a lightweight, hardcore predator on the racetrack that really does not care how empty it makes your bowels. Much like its predecessor, the legendary McLaren F1, the P1 demands the most of drivers who want to take it to its limit. That unbridled savagery is reflected in its design, which takes cues from some of nature’s best work, like the agile Cheetah or the hydrodynamic swordfish. Watch above as he breaks down his design process on McLaren’s hypercar.
