How many of you have actually read your owner’s manual? Chances are it’s still in your glovebox, untouched and sealed in the faux-leather or cloth holder it left the factory with. Or, in some cases, it’s completely digital. Which is kind of disappointing really. Design is such an important part of a vehicle. Why doesn’t it also extend to the manual?
There are some awesome examples of the contrary, like the hand-drawn diagrams featured in the owner’s manual of the McLaren F1 penned by Mark Roberts, one of the members of the car’s design team. With just over 100 units produced, the F1’s manual is a rare commodity. But there’s one case that’s even rarer…and it’ll hold your lunch too.
This lightweight carbon fibre case belongs to the Nissan Skyline GT-R Z-Tune. Only 19 Z-Tune Skylines were built – each essentially a completely handmade GT-R with reworked suspension, ECU, transmission setup, etc., and only 18 of them were delivered to customers. Each Z-Tune came with individually numbered, handmade carbon fibre briefcase, featuring a plaque matching the chassis number of the car.
Inside, there’s not too much to be honest. But hey, it’s lightweight. You get some keys to lock the case, diagnostic software and a Z-Tune catalogue featuring photos of the car’s development and testing. With all that empty space, why not throw your lunch in there too.
